Home Appliances That Cost the Most on Your Electricity Bill

Now, if your electricity provider charges approximately P10.219 per KwH, that means your aircon’s 169.02 KwH consumption will cost approximately P1,727.21 on your electric bill (that’s 169.02 KwH x P10.219).

Here’s a list of commonly used home appliances that might be responsible for your high electricity bill, as well as tips on how to properly use each appliance to lower your energy consumption and electricity bill.


1. Air conditioner (Typical hourly consumption: 600 to 2700 watts)

The KwH consumption of air conditioners depends on horsepower (HP). For example, an aircon unit with 0.5 HP will use about 600 watts, while a 2.5 HP aircon will consume approximately 2,700 watts. You might want to get a unit that has the lowest HP.

Your aircon’s energy consumption will go down if you decrease the number of hours or days of using it.

Here are a few other ways of economizing your aircon use:

  • Set the thermostat to 25 degrees Celsius, which is the ideal setting for a small room. If you’re sharing the room with other household members, use the electric fan to help spread the cool air.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are closed while the aircon is in use to help prevent the cool air from getting out of the room.
  • Clean the filter weekly, and the condenser and evaporator every 6 months. This maintenance procedure will ensure that the air will flow freely, which can help cool the room more quickly.

2. Clothes dryer (Typical hourly consumption: 4,000 watts)

The clothes dryer is the second highest energy-consuming appliance at home. So, take advantage of the summer months to dry your clothes under the sun instead of using a drying machine.

If you really need to dry your clothes using the machine, make sure to dry at full load to maximize its use. It’s also a good habit to put similar types of clothes together in the dryer, so it will take the same amount of time to dry them.

3. Refrigerator (Typical hourly consumption: 1,000 watts)

The refrigerator is one of the highest energy-consuming appliances in your home since it’s turned on 24/7. But, there are several things you can do to keep the amount of watts at a more manageable level.

For starters, choose a size that’s just right for the number of your family members. The bigger your fridge is, the more watts it will naturally consume. The right size will also ensure that you won’t overstuff or understuff it with food and drinks. This way, your fridge will only produce the energy it needs to keep refrigerated items cold.

If you must choose between a frost-free fridge and one that requires defrosting, choose the latter as it consumes less energy. Just make sure to defrost it once a week or as soon as there’s more than ¼ inch of ice in the freezer.

Choose the right location for your ref to decrease its power usage. Keep it as far away as possible from the stove or under direct sunlight. You can place your ref at least 1 inch away from the wall to keep it well ventilated. This will help the fridge run more efficiently since the motor isn’t being overworked.

4. Flat iron (Typical hourly consumption: 800 to 2,000 watts)


Despite its small size, the flat iron generates a considerable amount of wattage each time you use it. That said, you might want to do all your ironing in one go every week, but take time to select the clothes for ironing.

Maybe the clothes you use at home don’t need ironing. Just fold them neatly after getting them out of your drying machine. Following the right temperature setting for each type of clothing as recommended by the manufacturer can also help in controlling the energy used.

5. Desktop computer (Typical hourly consumption: 400 watts)


Even when your computer is in sleep or standby mode, it’s still running and consuming energy. This explains why a computer starts up quickly with just a move of the mouse. A good rule of thumb is to completely shut down your computer if you’re not going to use it for the next 2 hours.

6. Television (Typical hourly consumption: 80 to 400 watts)


If watching TV is your favorite pastime, at least try to be conscious about how you use your TV. Don’t leave it on while you’re asleep or when you have to do other things away from the TV. If you have more than one TV at home, try not to use them all at the same time, especially if your family members are just tuned in to the same channel.

7. Incandescent light bulb (Typical hourly consumption: 60 watts)

You might not be aware of it, but you might be wasting energy putting lighting fixtures in areas that don’t really need illumination, such as those near the windows. You can also save energy by using compact fluorescent bulbs since they’re more energy-efficient than incandescent lightbulbs.
